Walter J. Brown, 84, of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:04 A.M. at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Walter was born on September 5, 1933 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Elvin and Nellie (Clute) Brown. He graduated from Galesburg High School with the Class of 1952. He married Coleen E. Davis on September 12, 1954 in Galesburg, Illinois. He was then drafted by the United States Navy on December 7, 1955. He was Honorably Discharged December 6, 1961. It was in 1967 that his wife, Coleen, passed away. On August 11, 1984 in Galesburg he married Ann Gagg. He was very passionate about Civil War Reenactments. To many of his reenactment friends he was known as “Tacky”. It was at a reenactment that he met his eventual wife, Ann. He also enjoyed other various aspects of history, including roaming the cemeteries in search for old or historical stones. At family reunions, he would often be seen with the elder members of the family, seeking any information or stories that they could share. He was an avid reader, his favorite books and magazines were “True Detective”. Walter loved his family very much. He is survived by his wife, Ann Brown of Abingdon, 4 children, Cindy (Phil) Morris of Galesburg, Diana (Ken) Gough of Elgin, Illinois, James Brown of Louisiana, Julia Brown of Galesburg, 4 grandchildren, Heather Johnson, Lyndsey Morris, Elizabeth Gough, Amanda Stocchetti, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Willodean Carlson of Galesburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Coleen E. Brown parents, Elvin and Nellie Brown, grandchild, Brandon Lee Gough, and great-grandchild Dakota Johnson. A graveside memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Knoxville Cemetery. Pastor Nancy Wilson will be officiating the service. Memorial contributions can be left to the family. The Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville is assisting the family.
