Max Newby 91, of Galesburg, died Thursday December 1 following a brief illness. He was born September 3, 1925 to Loren and Hazel (Bundy) Newby. He graduated from Ridge Farm IL High School in 1944 and joined the Army shortly thereafter. He served in the 11th Airborne during the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan. He was present on the airstrip at Atsugi Airbase when General MacArthur arrived on the first day of occupation. He attended Illinois State University upon his return, graduating in 1951. He served briefly in the Army Finance Corps during the Korean War. He married Arleen Shols on October 25, 1953. She survives. He is also survived by his sons Stephen (Roberta) Newby of Argyle TX and Thomas (Karen) Newby of Princeton, four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Richard Newby of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John and sisters Betty Settle and Mary McFadden. He moved the family from Danville to Knoxville in 1966. He worked at Gale Products and later was the Treasurer of Dick Blick Company until his retirement in 1990. He was a loyal and active member of the Knoxville United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. He was a good athlete and played softball for many years. He was an avid bowler and golfer for many years as his health permitted. He was a lifelong Cubs fan who was delighted to see them win the 2016 World Series. Services will be Monday December 5 at 11:00 AM at the Knoxville United Methodist Church, with visitation starting one hour before. Rev. Chet Travis will officiate. Interment will be In Knoxville.
