Katherine M. Mattson, age 73 of Knoxville, Illinois died at 1:03PM on Friday, October 8, 2021 surrounded by family at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois. She was born on March 25, 1948 in Galva, Illinois on the family farm, the daughter of Rueben Palmer and Audrey Arlene (Burns) Anderson. She attended Canton Community College where she received her Associate Degree and Carthage College in Kenosha Wisconsin where she received her bachelors in education. She furthered her education at Augustana College and Western Illinois University where she received her Masters in Education. She married Robert Mattson on July 15, 1972 at the Messiah Lutheran, Galva, Illinois and together they had four daughters. Surviving is her husband, Robert Mattson of Knoxville, Illinois: four daughters: Erin (Edward) Matern of Monmouth, Illinois, Amy (Buck) Farley of Normal, Illinois, Kristina (Aaron) Brodrick of Knoxville, Illinois, and Meredith (Tyler) Rundle of Monmouth, Illinois; eleven grandchildren: Beverly (Jerry) Pitts of Monmouth, Illinois, Brooklynn and Gavin Matern, of Monmouth, Illinois, Caoilainn and Padraig Farley of Normal, Illinois, Kaleb, Kamden, and Kolton Brodrick of Knoxville, Illinois, Hayven, Ainsley, and Rhaiden Rundle of Monmouth, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jerald. She began her teaching career in Chicago Illinois as elementary school teacher. She then taught for the Galesburg School District as a substitute, then the Delong two room school house as a 4th 5th and 6th grade Teacher, then East Galesburg Elementary School as a P.E. Teacher, then Mable Woolsey Elementary School as a 2nd grade teacher, before ending her career as the Music Teacher at Mable Woolsey Elementary School. She retired after 43 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Illinois where she loved participating in the choir. She participated in the Municipal Band in Knoxville and Monmouth and the Coral Dynamics in Galesburg. She was active in a book club, card club and quilting. She also was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association, Spoon River Antique Agricultural Club and Coached Cheerleading at Monmouth College. Per Kathy’s wishes please join her family for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Illinois, Visiting with the family will be from 10:00am till 12:00pm. Memorial Services will follow the visiting at 12:00 Noon at the Church, with Rev. Tucker O’Leary Officiating. After the Memorial Services please join the family for a meal at the Church. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Knoxville, Illinois.
