Gene M. "Max" Johnson

Gene M. "Max" Johnson, age 93, passed away on October 17, 2017 at 4:01 A.M. at OSF Saint Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on September 4, 1924 in Manistique, Michigan, the son of Tyko and Violet Larson Johnson. He married Pauline Johnston in August of 1942 in Kohoka, Missouri. He married Betty M. Cain on October 7, 1978 in Altona, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 1, 2001. Surviving is his daughter, Ruth Ann (Terry) Hoiles of Traverse City, Michigan; and son, Wayne (Beverly) Johnson of Lehigh Acres, Florida; step-daughter Pat (Bob) Nelson of Brimfield, Illinois; and step-son Tom (Marty) Cain of Dunlap, Illinois. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Jo Shover of Stronghurst, Illinois and Joy Bair of Galesburg, Illinois; and one brother, Gary (Diane) Johnson of Derby, Indiana. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, David Johnson and Roger Johnson; one step-son, Don Cain; one brother, Kenneth Johnson; and one grandson. He worked for Midland Coal Company at Mecco Mine in Victoria, Illinois. He also farmed and did custom farm work. Gene was a World War II Army Veteran serving with the 33rd Infantry Division in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Victoria Legion Post 726, a 50 Year Member of the Altona Masonic Lodge No. 330, and also a member of the United Mine Workers of American Union Local 1131. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at the Westfall Cemetery in rural Victoria, Illinois.
