Opal Arlene Murray

Opal Arlene Murray went to be with her Lord on Thursday, April 26, 2018. She was born October 29, 1928 in Cazenovia, Illinois, the daughter of William and Seraphine (Attig) Christ. She married John Murray on April 11, 1958 who survives. Two daughters also survive, Julie D. (Ty) Aurand of Rockford, Illinois and Donna C. Murray-May (Stephen) of Eugene, Oregon. She is also survived by four grandchildren, four great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, four sisters and her brother preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. In addition, she was a Girl Scout leader and trainer for many years, serving on many of the committees and as a board member of the Mississippi Valley Girl Scouts with headquarters in the Quad Cities. She was given many awards for her services including the highest Girl Scout award for outstanding service and was awarded a lifetime membership of the Girl Scouts. When the Girl Scouts sold nearly all their campsites and the Boy Scouts sold their local campsite she became the founding member and president for many following years of the Western Illinois nature Group who developed and operated a 110 acre nature preserve property known as Blackthorn Hills, located near Galesburg, Illinois on the angling road to Alexis. She later served as Treasurer and as a board member at large. She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois with Pastor Chris Nissley officiating. Interment will be at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Peoria, Illinois. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church or the Galesburg Rescue Mission or the Western Illinois Nature Group.
