Orval E. Nelson, age 92, of 800 N Market Street, Knoxville, Illinois died Monday, April 14, 2008 at 6:10 P.M. at Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. He was born on November 22, 1915 in Douglas, Illinois, the son of Floyd and Lora Cowman Nelson. He married Helen Yarde on July 19, 1941 in St. Charles, Missouri. She survives of Knoxville, Illinois.
Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (Douglas) Donovan of Knoxville, Illinois and Noreen (Forry) Davis of Morton, Illinois; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred (Francis) Johnson of Long Beach, California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: John Nelson, Dean Nelson and Kenneth Nelson and one sister: Bernadine Fahlund.
He was reared and educated in Gilson, Illinois attending the Gilson School. He served in the United States Army from May 28, 1941 until November 13, 1945, receiving the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a salesman for Rogers Bros in Galesburg, Illinois and last worked for the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. He was a member of the Knoxville United Methodist Church and the Harry Philblad American Legion Post # 749 of Knoxville, Illinois.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Revs. Bob Herath and Jerry Hill officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial in the Knoxville Cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois with Military Rites conducted by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post # 285 of Galesburg, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Knoxville United Methodist Church.
