Ronald Delbert Nicely

Ronald Delbert Nicely, age 86, of Bettendorf, Iowa formerly of Galesburg, Illinois died on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:22 A.M. in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was born on November 22, 1921 in Green Valley, Illinois, the son of Charles Ray and Minerva Susan "Babe" Reichelderfer Nicely. He married Eunice Verneal Deffenbaugh on June 17, 1950 in Elliott, Illinois. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2007.
Surviving are two daughters, Becky (Chris) Dvorak of Plymouth, Minnesota and Barbara (Jeffrey) Nicely-Green of Bettendorf, Iowa; three grandchildren, Samantha Ann Dvorak, Cody Ronald Nicely-Green and Cole Jeffrey Nicely-Green. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Charles "Chuck" Boyd Nicely and one sister: Wanda Susan Baysinger.
He was raised and educated in Green Valley, Illinois graduating from Green Valley High School in 1939. He attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois where he received his BEA and the University of Illinois in Champaign where he received his Masters Degree in Education in 1953. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from 1939 until 1945. He was the youngest Staff Sargeant and served in Italy from 1941 until 1945. He was an art teacher for Galesburg School District 205 from 1950 until 1980.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Galesburg, Illinois; two bowling leagues in Galesburg; Knox County Retired Teachers; Illinois Education Association; National Education Association; and the Illinois Veterans Association. He loved his grandkids and enjoyed traveling with his family.
Cremation Rites will be accorded.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 12:00 P.M. at Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 10:00 until 12:00 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Private Inurnment in East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg, Illinois with Military Rites conducted by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post # 285 of Galesburg, Illinois. In-Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ronald Nicely Memorial Fund for the benefit of the University of Illinois at the Wells Fargo Bank in Bettendorf, Iowa.
