Doris Elizabeth (Tonkin) Powell, age 88, of Galesburg, Illinois formerly of Dahinda, Illinois died on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 2:15 A.M. at Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on November 23, 1922 in Wilburn, Illinois the daughter of Ralph Lester and Pearl Hyde Tonkin. She married Dorrance E. Powell on February 7, 1941 in Knoxville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 16, 1998.
Surviving are four sons, David (Rose) Powell of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Danny (Sandra) Powell of Laura, Illinois, Dennis Powell of Elk River, Minnesota and Delvin (Bonnie) Powell of Dahinda, Illinois; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and one sister, Vivian McQueen of Galesburg, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters; and her oldest son, Dickie Lee Powell who drowned July 1, 1952 at the age of 11 years old.
She was a homemaker all her life. She was raised and educated in Wilburn and Dahinda, Illinois, graduating from the Williamsfield High School in 1940. She was of the Methodist Faith.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois with Visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Norman Mendell officiating. Burial in Maquon Cemetery in Maquon, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Dahinda United Methodist Church.
