HARVEY F. GROHMANN, age 84, of Gilson, Illinois died on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 7:50 A.M. at his daughter's home in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on July 10, 1925 in St. Clair County, Illinois, the son of Benjamin F. and Mildred E. Lischer Grohmann. He married Ruby L. Harkness on July 8, 1944. He later married Helen M. Stivers on August 28, 1959 in Galesburg, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2008.
Surviving are two sons, Jim Grohmann of Elmwood, Illinois and Larry (Augusta) Grohmann of Yates City, Illinois; three daughters, Linda Gayle (Bill) Swanson of Galesburg, Illinois, Kathryn L. Hale of Knoxville, Illinois and Becky Grohmann of Galesburg, Illinois; eight grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one brother, Gary (Nancy) Grohmann of Boston, Massachusetts and a special friend, Ida Hendricks of Altona, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one great grandson: Caleb Hale and three brothers: Clyde, Wayne and David.
He was raised and educated in Yates City, Illinois graduating from Yates City High School in 1943. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II from 1943 until 1945. He was a farmer in Gilson, Illinois and worked as lead man at Admiral Manufacturing in Galesburg, Illinois retiring after 42 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Knoxville, Illinois and its Men's Group. He was also a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed his family, gardening and woodworking, especially making bird houses.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. David Shreeves officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Burial in Monmouth City Cemetery in Monmouth, Illinois with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post # 381 of Abingdon, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Knoxville Christian Church.
